Lighter-than-air systems are purpose built for quick-deployable communications and surveillance applications, ideal for emergency and disaster response, and of course conventional defence applications. Such systems can be operated by a small ground crew with a minimal footprint, carrying hardware anywhere from tens of metres to hundreds of metres. Depending on the size of the system, units may remain airborne for several weeks before regassing is required.
